Teacher Workshop and Study Tour Turkey

Thanks to a generous grant from the Turkish Cultural Foundation, the Alaska World Affairs Council and the Democracy Forum at UAA are proud to offer a full-day Teachers’ Workshop in the Consortium Library at the University of Alaska Anchorage on April 19th, 2008, focusing on a number of elements of Turkish culture and society. Participants will be provided with a wide-range introduction to Turkey including Turkish language, customs, history and food. After this workshop, all teachers will be invited to apply and four teachers will be selected to participate in a 10 day summer study tour of Turkey from June 30 – July 9, 2008. The study tour will include visits to historical sites, seminars, and meetings with the Turkish educators, including a special reception with the Minister of Education. Each teacher is expected to pay only $500 to the Turkish Cultural Foundation plus provide their own transportation to a Turkish hub (New York or Chicago). All other expenses, including airfare from New York or Chicago, hotels, local travel, and meals, will be covered by the Turkish Cultural Foundation.

Do you know a teacher who does or has done any of the following? If yes, NOMINATE HIM/HER for the annual AWAC Teacher Award! Deadline April 28th, 2008.

Teacher stimulates student interest in world affairs.
Teacher promotes democratic citizenship.
Teacher encourages and presents a wide spectrum of viewpoints.
Teacher facilitates building people-to-people ties.
Teacher encourages student language study and cross-cultural understanding.
Teacher encourages student participation in weekly luncheons, student World Quest, or U.N. simulations.
Teacher encourages student participation in world language festivals and events.
Teacher participates in adult World Quest, Great Decisions, or world affair luncheons, meetings or conferences.
Teacher leads student travel programs to other countries.
Teacher writes op-ed or newsletter articles on world language study or international events.
Teacher has given in-service presentations or conference workshops on an aspect of teaching world affairs or world languages.
Teacher publishes international education teaching units.
Teacher mentors other teachers on teaching of world affairs.

  Applications for AWAC Board of Directors

Applications for the upcoming Board of Directors election are now available. Candidates must be Council members to apply. All applications must be submitted to Lise, Falskow, AWAC Executive Director, no later than Tuesday, April 1, 2008. The Board will approve and announce the election slate in April and elections will take place at our Friday lunch program on May 2, 2008.


  WACA Teacher Workshop on Persia

The WACA is pleased to announce a teacher workshop on Persia for July 8 - 11, 2008 in Washington, DC. This exclusive workshop will offer 20 teachers the opportunity to meet with State Department officials, academics, and other Persian experts in an intimate setting to gain a comprehensive understanding of Persia's politics and culture.

This workshop opportunity is open to any high school teacher, department head, or administrator. Applications are due to Melissa Lawrence by e-mails at melissa@worldaffairscouncils.org  or fax at 202-833-4555 by the end of the day on April 10, 2008. We anticipate letting applicants know their status after April 15.

There are three parts to the applications:
 

1) A one page letter of intent from the applicant explaining why this workshop will benefit them and what they intend to do with the information they learned working with other educators

2) A current resume

3) A letter of recommendation from the applicant's local WAC that describes how the council and educator can work together to plan follow - up activities.

  AAD Student Essay Contest

The American Academy of Diplomacy (AAD) is sponsoring an essay contest for students with a first prize of $8,000 and an all expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. to discuss their essay with a senior State Department official. The contest is open to any American citizen who is an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled during the Spring Semester of 2008 as a degree student in international studies or political science with an emphasis on international studies.

The AAD is looking for students to critically and creatively about evaluating foreign policy challenges. The essay is framed as an Action Memorandum to the US Secretary of State on one of six foreign policy challenges. Students are asked to write an essay of no more than 1500 words evaluating and making a recommendation on policy. The deadline for submission is June 9, 2008.
