Alan Vanderploeg was raised in Prairie City, Iowa, a small farm town near Des Moines. In 1992, he earned a Bachelor of Sciences Degree in Aerospace Engineering from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. While attending college, Special Agent Vanderploeg worked for the Arizona State Department of Public Safety as a Campus Security Officer, where he was responsible for the administration of a crime-reduction grant.

In May 1992, Special Agent Vanderploeg was commissioned into the Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant and assigned to the Weapons, Air Base, and Range System Program Office at Eglin Air Force Base, Fort Walton Beach, Florida. His duties included designing, testing, and managing new weapons systems and other research and development programs. In September 1995, Lt. Vanderploeg was transferred to the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center, Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, New Mexico. His duties included managing the resources (people, equipment, and funds) needed to operationally test over 200 new weapons systems and platforms, valued at more than $50 million, to ensure that these weapons systems would work in combat environments. During this time, Lt. Vanderploeg was promoted to the rank of Captain.

In May 1998, Capt. Vanderploeg earned a Master’s Degree with honors in Security Management from Webster University, Albuquerque, New Mexico.

In January 1999, Capt. Vanderploeg separated from the Air Force and joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a Special Agent. Following a period of training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, Special Agent Vanderploeg was transferred to the Anchorage Division in Anchorage, Alaska.

Special Agent Vanderploeg has investigated a wide variety of crimes, including Fraud against the Government, Kidnaping, Bank Robbery, Financial Institution Fraud, Crimes Aboard Aircraft, Health Care Fraud, Public Corruption, Civil Rights Violations, Wire Fraud, Mail Fraud, Identity Theft, Interstate Stalking, Cyber (Computer) Crimes, Transportation, Distribution, and Possession of Child Pornography, and Online Enticement of Children. He is currently assigned to the Reactive Crime Squad and investigates Cyber crime.
